WEEK 1

Abby Perlman

Usually my typical summer day is full of a whole lot of nothing, and by the end of the week I have lost track of what day it is.  But this week I have done so much more than I would have at home, and I learned about things that I didn’t know I even had an interest in!

On Monday morning I walked into the Temple building at 1515 Market Street with no idea or expectations about what this program even was.  I knew it had something to do with journalism, that’s it.  Then I entered a room with about 20 kids that had the same mindset that I did.  We spent the first day getting to know each other, and even conducting our first interview.

Tuesday was incredible, we were visited by a real photographer who shared pictures from projects he was worked on in Baltimore, Africa, and Haiti.  I was very impressed by the amount of time he takes just to get close enough to somebody to take a picture of them.  But the best part of that day was when we went out with a partner and took pictures of people!  We spent Tuesday and Wednesday on photography and interviewing skills.  It was very exciting to go around the city and learn about random people.

We spent a lot of time writing toward the end of the week.  I learned a lot about putting an article together.  There are many different types of pieces you can write.  My favorite is an editorial, because I get to write about my opinion.

Overall, I had an awesome week, and I’m very excited for the next three.
